Average Typing Speed: What the Numbers Really Mean
"Average" typing speed is usually quoted as around 40 WPM. It is a useful reference point, but averages hide enormous variation between people, roles and contexts.
Why averages are rough
Measurement method matters: raw versus net speed, test length, and the type of text all shift the number. A five-minute test on common words will differ from a one-minute test full of symbols. Mobile typing is slower than keyboard typing, and experienced typists are far above the average.
How to use the number
Use averages for orientation, not judgement. Compare your own results over time, on the same type of text and duration, and you will get a much more useful picture than any single benchmark.
If your goal is work that requires sustained typing, build accuracy and endurance with longer tests rather than chasing a headline number.
